The owners of the Le Genévrier campsite in Baie-Saint-Paul, which has been affected by flooding for the fourth time since May, are growing impatient as they still wait for government help and it is still not available NO planned work.

The facility, which had become a symbol of the devastating May 1 floods due to the extent of the damage and images of mobile homes swept away by the force of the Mares River, was hit again on Sunday.

Co-owner Bruno Labbé then estimated his damage and loss at $12 million. And this does not take into account the investments in protecting the campsite from the subsequent floods and the sums for the renovation of the campsite, which despite everything was at less than 50% capacity this summer.

Some promises

“We were promised help and so far we have received absolutely nothing. It’s starting to be irritating,” said Bruno Labbé following Sunday’s events.

However, Bruno Labbé had received visits from several ministers and deputies since the sad events, including Tourism Minister Caroline Proulx in June, who then assured that announcements were “coming”.

Accompanied by the MP for Charlevoix-Côte-de-Beaupré, Kariane Bourassa, the minister responsible for the Capitale-Nationale, Jonatan Julien, also stated that the government would look for a way to help the Labbé family during a visit in August.

Important work

Before further incidents of this type occur, Bruno Labbé believes that interventions are necessary along the entire length of the Mares River, between the city’s water intake point and the Route 138 bridge.

According to him, the river should be redesigned on this land, which is about 800 meters long. He explains that the riverbed needs to be dug again as it is no longer there due to several floods.

“It is a major operation that will cost several million. We can cover a lot of costs, but we cannot pay for restoring the river to an acceptable and safe condition,” explains the co-owner of the facility.

“It will start urgently. We won’t be able to wait a year or two to study, otherwise we’ll be reliving it every month,” he added.
