Quito.- The President of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, today appointed General César Zapata as the new commander general of the Andean country’s National Police.
Zapata replaced Fausto Salinas, who was removed from office this Saturday following the deaths of seven hitmen arrested as suspects in the crime against presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio.
The decision was made during the Security Cabinet meeting, which Lasso called urgently given the prison crisis that the South American country has been experiencing since Friday evening.
Lasso also ordered six other detainees from the Villavicencio assassination attempt to be transferred to ensure their safety, although he did not specify where.
This Friday, six hitmen of Colombian nationality, suspected of the crime against the Ecuadorian politician and who were in the Litoral prison in the coastal city of Guayaquil, were murdered.
Meanwhile, this Saturday morning, another criminal of Ecuadorian origin was found dead in El Inca prison, north of Quito. This is the seventh linked to the attack that killed Villavicencio.
The Security Cabinet met here all morning today to discuss the situation in the prison system, but could not foresee that the seventh suspect could be murdered.
