Kevin Paredes Jiménez, a native of Ecuador, died early Sunday evening in Bera (Navarre) as a result of the explosion and fire of an electronic device that he had been charging on his bedside table, very close to the bed where he was sleeping . The police’s initial investigation has revealed that the explosion of the victim’s mobile phone was the cause of the fire, which affected the headboard and the mattress on which he was resting, causing severe burns from which he could not recover . The explosion occurred this Sunday afternoon in the victim’s room. The neighbors of the apartment block where the young man lived with his mother were the ones who informed the Civil Guard about the incident. Officers initially performed resuscitation maneuvers on the man, who was badly affected by burns and smoke. The victim was taken by medical helicopter to Cruces Hospital (Bizkaia), where he was admitted to the burns unit with a very serious prognosis. The Guardia Civil confirmed his death on Sunday after 9:30 p.m.
Police initially reported that the device that exploded was the victim’s cell phone. However, after an initial inspection, officials confirmed that the flames were caused by the explosion of an electronic device that was connected to electricity. However, they were unable to specify what type it was, as it was destroyed and no longer visible to the naked eye as a result of exposure to the fire.
