Nobel Prize in Economics awarded to Claudia Goldin for gender gap studies

The Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences was awarded Claudia GoldinAmerican economic historian and labor economist, for her studies Gender inequality. Goldin is currently a professor at the University of Harvard.

In justifying the recognition, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences cited Goldin’s studies “on understanding
Issues related to women in the labor market“.

Reasons for the award The American economist discovered “the main drivers of gender differences in the labor market” and “provided the first comprehensive report on how much women earn and how much they have participated in the labor market over the centuries.” His research illuminates both the reasons for the change and also “the main causes of the remaining gender gap”.

First female professor of economics at Harvard Claudia Goldin was born on May 14, 1946 and was the first woman to hold a professorship in economics at Harvard University. She is currently co-director of NBER’s Gender in the Economy Study Group and was director of NBER’s Development of the American Economy program from 1989 to 2017.
