How to see the shower of shooting stars this Monday, October 9th – L’Union

This Monday, October 9th, from 8 p.m., the French sky will be covered by several dozen shooting stars that we call Draconids.

We have to look up tonight. This Monday evening the sky will be covered in a shower of shooting stars from 8 p.m. to midnight. The latter are called Draconids based on the constellation Dragon.

They will pass through the sky between October 6th and 10th, but peak activity is expected this Monday evening. Tonight you can enjoy 10 shooting stars per hour. However, for this you need to follow some instructions.

Look north to enjoy the spectacle

First you have to look north, i.e. towards the constellation Dragon. This constellation is located west of Ursa Minor.

Fortunately for amateur astronomers, it is not necessary to have a special instrument to observe them. Draconids are visible to the naked eye. The best way to observe them is to get as far away from artificial light sources as possible.

Still, you have to stay focused so as not to miss the ten shooting stars per hour, because the Draconids are in a rather quiet swarm, except in 2021, when we were able to count up to 600 meteors per hour. A phenomenon that, according to Nord Littoral, we will not find again before 2062.
