There was a large turnout at the Montreal SPCA to mark Fee-Free Adoption Day as the organization sees a large number of abandoned animals.

Pet purchases experienced an upswing during the pandemic, but the inflationary context is forcing many owners to give up their animals.

Given the excitement surrounding the day, the SPCA Montreal’s deputy director reminds future owners that they have responsibilities.

“There is an economic reason behind almost every task. Whether it’s housing, the difficulty of finding affordable housing with a pet. Otherwise, medical costs come into play,” says Laurence Massé.

“There are also all the behavioral problems.”

According to the Association of Veterinary Doctors of Quebec, the average annual cost for a dog varies between $2,700 and $3,400, while for a cat that figure is estimated at $2,400.

As they passed the SPCA on Jean Talon Street, dozens of people lined up to take advantage of the promotion.
