Burma: 29 dead in army attack on camp for internally displaced people

Yangon | An attack by the Burmese army killed 29 people at a camp for internally displaced people in northern Burma, a spokesman for the ethnic rebel group that controls the region told AFP on Tuesday.

“We found 29 bodies, including those of children and elderly people. 56 people were injured,” said Naw Bu, a Kachin Independence Army (KIA) official.

The official said investigations were underway to understand the origin of the attack, which took place at around 11:30 p.m. local time (5:00 p.m. GMT) on Monday at a camp near Laiza, not far from the Chinese border.

“We didn’t hear any planes,” he said, asking whether the army used a drone in the attack.

There have been regular clashes between the KIA and the army for decades. Fighting has intensified since the February 2021 coup that brought the junta to power.

Around 50 people were killed and 70 injured in air strikes by the Myanmar Air Force on a KIA concert in October 2022
