National Security Council spokesman John Kirby choked up as he spoke about brutal images from Israel showing atrocities committed by Hamas terrorists in the Jewish state.

The White House official was almost at a loss for words on Monday when asked by CNN host Jake Tapper about the images of kidnapped children, allegedly raped women and other “horrific” scenes following Saturday’s Hamas invasion of the Gaza-Israel border .

“I, uh, I-I’m sorry. “It’s very – sorry,” Kirby said, visibly shaken as he tried to calm himself down.

“It’s very difficult to look at these images, Jake, and the human cost. These are people. They are family, they are friends, they are loved ones, cousins, brothers, sisters. Yes, it is difficult and I apologize,” he added.

“There is no reason to apologize,” Tapper reassured the Biden administration official.

Hamas’s surprise attack against Israel on Saturday, which included rocket attacks and the surge of armed terrorists across the border, killed over 700 Israelis and injured over 2,150.

About 100 people have reportedly been kidnapped from Israel and taken to Gaza, where they are being held hostage.

In addition to the 11 confirmed deaths of U.S. citizens in Israel, Kirby said that “there are additional American citizens who remain missing.”

“The U.S. government is doing everything we can to determine the whereabouts of these U.S. citizens,” he said. “The President has directed his team to work with his Israeli counterparts on every aspect of the hostage crisis, including sharing intelligence and deploying experts from across the U.S. government to consult and advise Israeli counterparts on hostage recovery efforts. “

Kirby said it was difficult to look at the images from Israel given the “human cost” of Hamas’ weekend attack. Portal

“I cannot say with certainty that we know that Americans are being held hostage,” Kirby added. “However, we must accept the grim possibility that some will be affected.”

Kirby’s reaction on Monday was similar to when he got emotional in discussing the violent images that emerged during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

“It’s difficult to look at the…sorry…. It’s difficult to look at some of the pictures and imagine that any good-thinking, serious, mature leader would do that,” Kirby said of Russian President Vladimir Putin. “So I can’t talk about his psychology, but I think we can all talk about his depravity.”
