White House: Iran ‘complicit’ in Israeli attacks, no direct evidence

White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan answers questions during the daily press conference at the White House in Washington, DC on October 10, 2023.

Jonathan Ernst | Portal

National security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters on Tuesday that Iran was “complicit” in Hamas’ attack on Israel but that there was no evidence linking Tehran to the weekend’s violence.

“We have said from the beginning that Iran is complicit in the broadest sense because it has provided the lion’s share of funding for Hamas’s military wing, provided training, provided capabilities and provided support. “I have had involvement and contact with them over many years Hamas, and all of that contributed to what we saw,” Sullivan said.

“As to whether Iran knew about this attack in advance or helped plan or direct this attack, as of this moment, as I stand here at the podium, we have no confirmation of that.”

President Joe Biden has stressed the importance of adhering to the laws of war as Israel responds with overwhelming force to Hamas’ devastating terrorist attack that targeted hundreds of civilians.

Biden said he told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that if the American people were subjected to terrorism of the kind Israel has suffered in recent days, the U.S. response would be swift, decisive and overwhelming.

The president described Hamas’s deliberate attacks on civilians as “pure, unadulterated evil.”

But Biden said democracies are stronger and safer when they act according to the rule of law.

“Terrorists specifically target and kill civilians. We uphold the laws of war. It’s important – there is a difference,” Biden said in a televised address.

More than 1,000 Israelis have died in Hamas’ attack on towns on the Gaza border. At least 830 Palestinians were killed in Israeli retaliatory strikes.

Israel ordered a “full siege” of Gaza on Monday, cutting off electricity, food and fuel to the densely populated, impoverished enclave.

National security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters on Tuesday that he believed Israel was not planning a total siege of the Gaza Strip, but Biden and Netanyahu discussed how to distinguish terrorists from civilians.

“We are consulting with the Israeli government about its actions in this regard,” Sullivan said.

“President Biden and Prime Minister Netanyahu had the opportunity to talk about the difference between going full force against Hamas terrorists and how we differentiate between terrorists and innocent civilians.”

Biden wants Congress to take “urgent action” on security assistance as the House remains leaderless

President Joe Biden said the White House will call on Congress to take “urgent action” to fund the national security needs of U.S. allies following Hamas’ devastating attack on Israel.

Biden said his administration worked closely with Congress during the crises in Israel and Gaza.

“This is not about party or politics. This is about the security of our world – the security of the United States of America,” the president said.

Congress is currently facing paralysis as the House of Representatives remains leaderless a week after Kevin McCarthy was ousted by a faction of far-right Republicans in a vote of no confidence.

Congress can do little until a new speaker is elected. House Republicans will vote on Wednesday to select a candidate for the office, who will then go to a full vote in the House.

It’s unclear whether the front-runners, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, can get the 217 votes needed to become speaker.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas is unlikely to have a major impact on the market, says Goldman Sachs’ top strategist

David Kostin, chief US equity strategist at Goldman Sachs, does not expect the Israel-Hamas conflict to have a major impact on markets.

“From a human perspective, it’s a tragedy,” Kostin told CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” on Tuesday. “Basically, it’s about us achieving the profits of the last three months, which is of course looking back. And the outlook going forward is probably more domestic issues that are somehow relevant to a lot of portfolio managers.”

“So it’s less likely to have a big impact on a sustained basis,” Kostin said.

Still, the strategist expects other risk factors to continue to weigh on stocks, citing higher yields and oil prices that could hamper stocks’ expansion. He expects the S&P 500 to end 2023 around the 4,300 level, slightly lower than where the broader index last stood at around 4,380. He added that cash was attractive.

However, he does not expect an imminent recession.

The United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned of the rapidly deteriorating situation due to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

“Less than 72 hours after the horrific violence erupted in Israel, reports suggest that serious rights abuses against children are widespread. Many children were killed or injured, while countless others were subjected to violence,” UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell wrote in a statement.

“I remind all parties that in this war, as in all wars, children suffer first and most,” she added.

Russell called for the immediate and safe release of all children held hostage in Gaza.

“There are a number of missing Americans. “We expect to hear from many families trying to get information about loved ones they haven’t heard from,” Kirby said.

“Some of these people could be lost, some of them could be injured in hospitals, some of them could be missing, but we have to prepare for the possibility and likelihood that some of them will be held hostage,” he added.

The root causes of the conflict must be addressed to break the cycle of violence: Head of the Palestinian Mission to the UK

The root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict must be addressed to break the cycle of violence and find a just solution, Husam Zomlot, head of the Palestinian mission to the United Kingdom, told CNBC.

“Instead of wasting this precious time talking about the consequences, we should talk about the root causes. And I’m here to talk about the root causes. “Don’t underestimate people’s desire for freedom,” Zomlot said. “This is not about the last 48 hours. It’s about 100 years of complete neglect and dehumanization of the Palestinian people. And this is an opportunity … for all of us to wake up, be courageous and really shout, spade by spade,” he said.

The United Nations classifies Israel as an occupying state over the Palestinian territories, whose occupations and annexations following the 1967 Six-Day War continue to violate international law. Since then, Israel has been accused by the United Nations and human rights organizations of numerous human rights violations against Palestinians, including denying basic services, killing civilians and restricting freedom of movement. Israel says its policies are designed to ensure the security of its people and are the result of the Palestinians’ actions.

“We have failed to bring all of us, the international community, together first and foremost to give people hope and hope,” Zomlot said. “And this is a wake-up call for all of us that we actually need to provide such an alternative path. The Palestinian people have been subjected to oppression and brutality for 100 years.”
