Israel-Hamas War Live Updates: Biden Condemns Attack as Israel Prepares Ground Strike in Gaza – The Wall Street Journal

The newest: Israeli airstrikes reduced parts of the Gaza Strip to rubble on Tuesday as the military massed troops at the border in response to the Hamas incursion. Israel had previously retaken control of southern cities and announced it would impose a full siege on the Palestinian enclave.

Losses: About 1,200 Israelis have died since the attack began. The US said at least 14 of its citizens had died. Gaza officials say 900 people have been killed there by Israeli strikes. Israel said the bodies of around 1,500 Hamas fighters were found in Israel.

Hostages: Hamas said it had kidnapped dozens of people and taken them to the Gaza Strip to hinder Israeli operations. Hamas has threatened to execute Israeli hostages if Israel continues to bomb civilian homes in Gaza without warning.

US response: Addressing the nation from the White House, President Biden called Hamas’ attack on Israel “an act of absolute evil.” He said the U.S. would quickly provide more military aid, including ammunition and equipment, to replenish Israel’s Iron Dome defense system. The aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford arrived in the region with its accompanying guided-missile destroyers, and the first aircraft carrying advanced U.S. weapons landed at an air base in southern Israel.

Iran: Iranian security officials helped plan the attack, senior members of Hamas and Hezbollah said. The Pentagon warned Iran and Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militia in Lebanon, not to join the fighting.
