(CNN Spanish) –– A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Afghanistan near the border with Iran early Wednesday (local time), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The seismic center of gravity was at a depth of 10 kilometers and the epicenter was 28.3 kilometers south-southeast of Herāt in the region of the same name and 38.8 kilometers southeast of Chahār Burj in the same region.

According to the Taliban, more than 2,000 people died in the earthquake in western Afghanistan

The earthquake occurred just days after another earthquake in the same Herat province in western Afghanistan, which killed at least 2,053 people, according to the Taliban this Sunday. The deaths were reported in 13 villages in Herat. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mojahid said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that 1,240 people were injured and 1,320 houses were completely or partially destroyed.

Mojahid added that rescue teams had arrived in Herat province and food, water, medicine and clothing had also been sent to the scene. The weekend’s magnitude 6.3 earthquake was recorded 40 kilometers west of the city of Herat in Herat province and is Afghanistan’s third strongest earthquake.
