Gwyneth Paltrow and Fernanda Montenegro

Gwyneth Paltrow’s 1999 Oscar win sparked renewed controversy on social media. The actress stated that she was using the Best Actress statuette as a doorstop and outraged Brazilians as that category was then contested against Fernanda Montenegro. Following the response to the statement, the North American team commented on the case.
A representative for Paltrow told Variety that the speech was a joke by the actress. “Of course it’s a joke,” he explained. The spokesperson also mentioned the artist’s old interview with The New York Times, in which she said she had kept the award at her home in New York, in the United States.
Gwyneth won the Oscar for her work in Shakespeare in Love, while the Brazilian competed for the statuette after her acclaimed performance in Central do Brasil. Some netizens pointed out that the actress was joking when talking about using the statuette, but others took advantage of the situation to once again criticize the North American for her victory.
Check out some of the public’s reactions:
The darling, who won the Oscar in the competition WITH FERNANDA MONTENEGRO, said that she uses it on the door of her house as a weight to hold the door. FERNANDONA deserves much more than that! Our dramaturgy lady is clearly superior to this pic.twitter.com/YikNFqHbMS

A random thing that drove me crazy:
Do you know Gwyneth Paltrow’s Oscar? The one that, if the Oscar were a fair award, would have gone to Fernanda Montenegro, you know?
That’s the way it is.
She uses it as a DOOR WEIGHT!Goblin Comments (@leprechauneumsm) October 10, 2023
I know that Gwyneth Paltrow uses the Oscar she won in 1999 as a weight on the garden door of her house, while the statue could shine on Fernanda Montenegro’s bookshelf pic.twitter.com/Owz7gSkH0X
