The decision comes a day after the United States announced it would cut $442 million in economic aid to the country and France began withdrawing its troops stationed in the country at the request of the Nigerian military.
“The Government decides to instruct the Ambassador and Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System, Her Excellency Ms. Louise Aubin, to take all necessary measures to leave Niamey within 72 hours,” the Foreign Ministry wrote.
Canadian Aubin was appointed to the position in January 2021.
The Nigerian power justified its decision by saying that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had set “obstacles” to Niger’s “full and complete participation” in the organization’s 78th General Assembly, which took place in New York in September. .
On July 26, this Sahel country’s military staged a coup to depose the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum.
