Put a cap on gasoline retailers profit margins

Fewer gas stations and more charging stations in Quebec

The number of gas stations fell slightly in Quebec between 2019 and 2022, as did sales of gasoline and diesel, while charging stations saw slightly greater use in the province’s gas stations.

This was hinted at in the 5th edition of the portrait of the gasoline and diesel retail market in Quebec, published on Thursday by the Régie de l’énergie.

Thus, in 2022 there were 2,779 gas stations in operation in the province of La Belle, a decrease of 1.49% compared to 2019.

In total, gas stations sold 8,316 million liters of fuel, a decrease of 8.64% between 2019 and 2022, according to the Régie de l’énergie.

Montreal, Montérégie and the Laurentians alone account for more than 42% of the province’s gasoline and diesel supply. In contrast, the regions of Côte-Nord, Nord-du-Québec, Gaspésie-îles-de-la-Madeleine, Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Mauricie are below the average number of gas stations per km2.

As a sign of change, more and more gas stations are offering charging stations for electric vehicles.

According to the report, almost 130 gas stations offered this service in 2022, compared to 38 in 2019. However, this represents only 4.68% of the number of gas stations in Quebec.

Charging stations are also only available at gas stations in 10 of Quebec’s 17 administrative regions, while gas stations in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Côte-Nord and Nord-du-Québec do not offer this service.
