Syrian state television reported that an Israeli attack targeted the main airports in the capital Damascus and the city of Aleppo in the north of the country this Thursday (12).

Local media station Sham FM said Syrian air defenses were deployed in response to the attack, Portal news agency reported.

After the attacks, airport operations were suspended.

Israel had no comment until this report was last updated.

What is the aim of the attack?

Israeli attacks on strategic locations in Syria, including airports in Aleppo and Damascus, have been commonplace for years.

Sources consulted by Portal said Thursday’s attacks were aimed at cutting off Iranian supply lines to Syria, where Tehran’s influence has increased since it backed President Bashar alAssad in the civil war that began in 2011.

Furthermore, Israel believes that most of the weapons going to Iran a supporter of Palestine come from Syria.

The attacks came a day before Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian’s visit to Syria.

On Thursday, technical teams assessed the extent of the damage at both locations, the Syrian transport ministry said.
