An unauthorized pro-Palestine demonstration intensified in Paris on Thursday night.

Water cannons, tear gas and batons: riots broke out at a pro-Palestine rally in Paris on Thursday night. Videos on social media show protesters running out of control in Republic Square in eastern Paris and being surrounded by police.

Protesters apparently painted “Free Palestine” on the square’s monument. Police used tear gas and water cannons.

The French government decided on Thursday afternoon to generally ban pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

Several climbs in recent days

In recent days, several demonstrations in the context of the conflict in the Middle East have increased. In Duisburg (D), several hundred police officers prevented clashes between pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian protesters. Two people who participated in the pro-Palestine demonstration were detained for making inflammatory statements.

Police also broke up a Palestinian demonstration in Berlin, sometimes violently. In the Neukölln district, several people attacked a police car and a police officer was injured. Authorities presume the attackers were supporters of the radical Islamic group Hamas.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrations are also taking place in Switzerland. A call for a demonstration on Friday is spreading on social media. This will take place from 5pm on Barfüsserplatz in Basel. Under the slogan “Defend Palestine”, the organizers call for “an end to the genocide in Gaza”. The Basel-Stadt cantonal police are preparing accordingly. It is unclear whether demonstrations are planned in other Swiss cities on Friday. (ene)
