At the beginning of his third full season in the somewhat crazy world of the Canadian, Cole Caufield is increasingly finding his way. Little by little, the child from a small town in Wisconsin feels more and more comfortable in the metropolis of Quebec.
“I feel more and more at home. It’s a really special place. I’m really happy to be here and hope to stay here for several seasons,” he said, sitting comfortably in the team’s locker room in Brossard.
Coming from a football-loving region of the world and a university where interest in hockey far outpaced that of NCAA football, Caufield quickly realized he had landed on another planet.
It’s been a long time since the Canadian last bet on such an exciting player. And with Carey Price practically retired and back in British Columbia, Caufield is the hottest man in town.
“I haven’t experienced anything scary yet, but it’s definitely unique,” said the 22-year-old. Moving around without being recognized is impossible. Sometimes you wish for quieter days. You have to do adult things like go to the grocery store and people stop you on the street.”
Even though a 15-minute run may take more than twice as long, don’t think he’ll complain.
“The fans are great to us, so we can give something back.”

Jealous people all over the league
Caufield is so attached to Montreal that he doesn’t shy away from bragging about it to all of his former teammates in the American National Development Program. It’s no surprise that we occasionally see Jack Hughes and Trevor Zegras on city streets during the offseason.
“They are so jealous of Montreal. Every time I tell them there’s no better place to play, they tell me they love coming to the Bell Center.
But you have to experience it first to really understand it. That’s what Caufield actually said to his friends when he first talked to them about Montreal.
“I told them they wouldn’t believe it. We are really lucky to be able to experience this every night. It doesn’t matter if we are first or last, people come and support us.”
If Kent Hughes needs a good salesman to lure other big names to the Canadian, he knows who to turn to.
Which teammate would you go with?
…at the Canadian Grand Prix?
Christian Dvorak. He’s a quiet guy. I would probably talk to him all the time. I would probably end up losing track of the race.
…at the LASSO festival?
I know we have a lot of country fans on the team. I would probably bring Kirby Dach. He’s never been there before, so this would be an opportunity for both of us to experience our first time together.
…at a Taylor Swift concert?
Johnathan Kovacevic. The guys identified me as the biggest Taylor Swift fan on the team. But I think it’s him. He deserves to come with me.
…at a Canadiens game at the Bell Centre?
I saw some with Chris Wideman on the runway last year, so I would choose someone else. And I would try to sit deeper. I would choose David Savard. That would be fun. He made a lot of comments and we ate hot dogs.
