A heroic police officer did not hesitate to jump into the cold waters of the Saint-François River in Sherbrooke on Wednesday evening to save a woman who had just thrown herself into the river’s waves.
Sherbrooke police revealed the officer’s crime in a news release Thursday evening.
At approximately 9:30 p.m., a citizen called 911 to report a woman walking erratically toward the Aylmer Bridge at King Street West. The witness was still on the phone when she saw the woman jump into the water in distress, which allowed emergency services to be quickly notified.
When the first four police officers arrived, they began a rescue operation, but given the urgency of the situation and the fact that the woman was floating, one of them removed his equipment and jumped into the river. He managed to reach her and then brought her back to shore where she joined her colleagues.
The victim, a 36-year-old woman, was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries and to assess her mental health.
