Daniel Alfredsson is back with the Senators

The Ottawa Senators were pleased to welcome former captain Daniel Alfredsson back to practice as he was rehired by the team as a reliever.

The organization’s new president, Steve Staios, confirmed to media representatives that the 50-year-old Swede would be back. His role has not been officially announced, but he is expected to take on player development and coaching duties.

Alfredsson spent 17 of his 18 seasons in the National Hockey League with the Senators. He holds the team record for goals (426), assists (682) and points (1,108). He was drafted in the sixth round in 1994, played 1,178 games in Ottawa and his famous number 11 was displayed at the Canadian Tire Centre.

The right winger played one final season on the Bettman circuit with the Detroit Red Wings in 2013-2014, but signed a one-day contract to retire in the Sens’ jersey. Between 1999 and 2013 he wore the “C” in the Canadian capital.

Shortly after hanging up his skates, Alfredsson became a consultant for the organization’s hockey operations. He left the country in July 2017 after failing to negotiate a new pact.
