Il Camorrista Giuseppe Tornatore’s series, unreleased and never broadcast, at the Rome Film Festival 2023 Best Film

The Camorra – The Series From Giuseppe Tornatore will be shown on Thursday, October 26th at the eighteenth edition of the preview Rome Film Festival.

The five-part series was shot in 1985 at the same time as the film of the same name, produced by Titanus Produzione and ReteItalia and released in cinemas in 1986. The series never aired; The current revision was produced by Titanus Production and RTI – Mediaset and is distributed by Minerva Pictures. The restoration was carried out by Tornatore himself: the audience can see the first and fourth episodes at 7 p.m. in the Sala Sinopoli.

The following day, the filmmaker, who won an Oscar and a Grand Prix at Cannes for “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso,” will be a guest at the Rome Film Festival a meeting with the public which will take place again at 4 p.m. in the Sala Sinopoli.

Giuseppe Tornatore explains in one of his letters published in the press along with the news:

“The fate of my first film, Il camorrista, is strange. To achieve this, the producer must Goffredo Lombardo from that Titanus He suggested that I also do a series version for television. A game of chance that was ahead of its time We were in 1985, the series fever was still far away, But thanks to Lombardo’s foresight, we had the necessary budget to carry out the project.

That’s why I shot both the film intended for classic theatrical release and the five one-hour episodes for television at the same time. Unfortunately, the film did not have an easy life due to the burning issues it dealt with and disappeared from circulation a few weeks after its theatrical release. Disheartened, the distributors never aired the television series and the five episodes were lost in 35mm warehouses..

Today, after about forty years, these five hours have emerged again from the shadows thanks to the revival of production of the glorious Titanus brand and Guido Lombardo, together with the new managers, asked me to restore and rework them. I willingly joined in the undertaking involved a new 4K scan of the original media, innovative color correction, an amazing remake of the monotone reconverted to 5.1 and the 16:9 format resizing from the original 1:33.

The cut remained intact, but was lightened slightly to shorten the duration of each episode to approximately fifty-five minutes. Returning to a project that was created when I was a little boy was a real emotion because I found in it all the commitment and enthusiasm that had brought me closer to the profession of cinema.“.
