Massimo Ranieri left Naples at 17: “Separated from his family, I spoke to the wall”

Massimo Ranieri spoke to Verissimo about himself and revealed the difficulties of the beginning when he had to leave his city.

To the microphones from Verissimo, Massimo Ranieri, one of the most appreciated Neapolitan artists of all time, said of his “drama”: “The mistake, first of all, is that I left my family when I was 17.” I was a child. I was separated from my siblings and my parents – that is a high price to pay. I was alone in Rome when I was 17. I asked myself who am I? We’re talking about 55 years ago, when I came to the capital. I missed my mother’s love. There is a song called “Soli si mori”. You don’t feel good alone, that has to be clear. Inevitably, you miss a soul by your side, a person who gives you advice, who caresses you, who welcomes you when you return home. I’ve been talking to the wall for years. I asked myself the questions. These are the things you pay for.”

Then he added: “Then I don’t have a family of my own, but that was a decision. I always told myself: ‘Don’t do anything stupid, because family is an important thing. If you feel like it, be honest like yourself.’ “When I ask myself if I want to take this step, I look in the mirror and say to myself, ‘Are you sure? You must be sure, this is not a joke “We are talking about hearts, minds, souls, not a song.” I always waited before taking such a step. They say: “Never say never”, I definitely hope so, I hope so, I wish it too. Because I’m no longer a child, Silvia, I’m 72 years old. And certain decisions need to be made with seriousness and judgment.”
