Mummified corpses: More than 200 dead exotic birds found in a house

An exotic bird sanctuary in a Belgian city was horrified to discover more than 200 dead birds, some mummified and covered in cobwebs, after they were called to a house during a police operation.

The president of the Au Bonheur de ViCa bird sanctuary, Franck Lorigiola, described the horrific scene as an “ossuary” in which a 20cm-thick carpet of feces, bones, seeds and feathers was scattered, to Belgian newspaper L’ Avenir, reported “7sur7” on Friday.

A two-and-a-half-hour rescue operation in a house near Dinant city center on Thursday allowed the rescue of 53 birds still alive, but in a critical condition, while some of them showed signs of cannibalism, the Belgian refuge reported.

Regrettably, the remains of 202 birds were also found at the scene, some of which were in an advanced state of mummification at the bottom of their cobweb-filled cages, leaving emergency responders deeply shocked at the scene.

The owner of the premises could, in turn, be the subject of an investigation for “voluntary abandonment”, according to “7sur7”.

“If you experience abuse, please come forward,” the shelter urged in a Facebook post Thursday.
