Demonstration in London brings crowds together this Saturday (October 14); Protesters demand “freedom” for Palestine

Protesters are gathering for proPalestine demonstrations in at least seven European countries this Saturday (October 14, 2023). There are records of acts in England, Spain, Scotland, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland and Germany.

Videos shared on social media show acts in cities including London, Liverpool, Frankfurt and Dublin. Demonstrators carry Palestinian flags and placards demanding “freedom” and “justice” for Palestinians.

UNDERSTAND

On October 7, Hamas attacked Israel and claimed responsibility for the attack. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared war on the extremist group and spoke of the organization’s “destruction.”

The Israeli government responded to the attacks with bombings in the Gaza Strip and a siege in the region.

In retaliation for the Israeli military response, Hamas threatened to kill hostages. On Monday (October 9), leaders of the United States and Europe called on other countries not to get involved in the war, fearing an escalation of the conflict.

On October 9, the commander of the FAB (Brazilian Air Force), Brigadier General Marcelo Damasceno, announced that the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) would collect 900 Brazilians who were in Israel from October 10 to 14 . A total of 6 trips will be carried out. 4 of them are already finished.

Here is the repatriation schedule

  • on October 10, the first FAB aircraft sent for repatriation landed in Tel Aviv, the capital of Israel;
  • The plane arrived in Brasília on October 11 and 211 Brazilians were rescued. Passengers told journalists about the terror amid the bombings and the futile attempts to leave the region;
  • President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) welcomed the Brazilians who arrived in Brasília;
  • on October 11, the 2nd FAB aircraft was sent to Israel and made a stopover in Rome;
  • In addition to the 214 Brazilians repatriated, the 2nd FAB aircraft also brought 1 dog and 3 cats. It took off from Tel Aviv on October 11 and landed in Rio de Janeiro on October 12;
  • The 3rd FAB aircraft left Brasília on October 10th. Arrived in Israel on October 12th. It landed in Recife on October 13, bringing 69 passengers;
  • On October 13th, the 4th FAB aircraft took off from Tel Aviv with 207 passengers, 2 cats and 2 dogs. Lands in Rio de Janeiro on October 14th;
  • The fifth aircraft took off from Rio de Janeiro on October 12th. It was scheduled to arrive in Brazil on October 15, carrying 210 passengers;
  • The sixth plane, with capacity for 40 people, left Brasilia for the Gaza Strip. The request for the aircraft was urgent;

Defense Minister José Múcio Monteiro said Brazil was the first country to carry out this operation. Lieutenant Brigadier General Marcelo Damasceno said this was the largest repatriation operation of Brazilians in history.
