European Commission: Humanitarian aid to Gaza increased by 50 million

The European Commission wants to immediately increase humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip by 50 million euros, for a total of more than 75 million euros. Aid is intended to reach those in need in the Gaza Strip in cooperation with the United Nations, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (65) said on Saturday evening after a conversation with the UN Secretary-General , António Guterres (74).

“Tripling EU humanitarian aid will help ensure that the civilian population in Gaza can receive essentials,” said EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Protection Janez Lenarcic (55). Ensuring safe and unhindered access to humanitarian assistance is crucial. Von der Leyen also stressed that the Commission supports Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas, in full compliance with international humanitarian law.

Earlier this week, the EU announced that it would suspend its development aid to the Palestinians and review aid funds worth €700 million. Development aid – unlike humanitarian aid – is a long-term measure to promote economic and social development.

The approximately 75 million euros that the European Commission is now providing is purely humanitarian emergency aid, such as that provided in Syria or Afghanistan.

Humanitarian help

Humanitarian aid supports people who find themselves in an acute emergency situation due to crises, conflicts or natural disasters and who are unable to cope alone. Its aim is to enable those affected to survive in dignity and safety, to give them perspective on life and to alleviate suffering.

The nature of humanitarian aid is that it is often carried out in difficult environments, under poor security conditions and under high time pressure.
