A well known Iranian filmmaker and his wife are found murdered in their home

Tehran, Iran – Renowned Iranian film director Dariush Mehrjui and his wife were stabbed to death in their home by an unknown assailant, state media reported today.

Mehrjhi and his wife Vahideh Mohammadifar were found dead with stab wounds to the neck, Hossein Fazeli, a justice official, told the official IRNA news agency.

The filmmaker’s daughter, Mona Mehrjui, found the bodies while visiting her father at his home in a suburb about 30 kilometers west of the capital Tehran last night.

Authorities were investigating, said the report, which did not mention speculation about a motive, although the woman had reported a knife threat on social media in recent weeks.

Mehrjui, 83, was considered a co-founder of the new wave of Iranian cinema in the early 1970s, which focused primarily on realism. He received numerous awards, including a Silver Hugo from the Chicago International Film Festival in 1998 and a Golden Shell at the San Sebastián International Festival in 1993.

Mehrjui studied film at the University of California, Los Angeles in the early 1960s.
