Amber Heard’s ‘In the Fire’ director calls her a ‘fearless truthteller’

In “In the Fire” – Amber Heard’s first film since losing her legal battle with ex-husband Johnny Depp – she plays a “fearless fortune teller whose beliefs lead to her being dragged, whipped and beaten through the public eye.”

“And that’s what I see in Amber,” director Conor Allyn told Rolling Stone last Friday.

“I see a fearless truthteller whose beliefs have given her the 2022-2023 version of this, carried through social media on a global, epic scale.”

The 37-year-old actress portrays Dr. Grace Burnham, a woman who sparks a war between science and religion because of her treatment of a “demonic” boy murderer on a remote plantation in the 1890s.

In a key scene, Grace is asked under hypnosis “what her lie is,” and she replies, “That I am a fraud.” That I repeat the teachings of great men but am not one of them. That I travel to the edge of the world to prove myself, only to fail.’

The 33-year-old filmmaker almost cut the scene entirely because he realized it sounded too much “like a meme” that flooded social media during Amber’s six-week defamation trial in 2022, which was livestreamed.

The 87-minute film has grossed just $21,014 at the global box office since opening in limited U.S. theaters last Friday.

“In the Fire” currently has a dismal 11% critic score (from nine reviews) and a 29% audience score (from over 100 reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes.

“The first thing she said was, ‘I’m so sorry this happened and that my personal baggage might have hurt the film,'” Conor recalled.

“She called me to apologize and that tells me everything I need to know about her character.”

Allyn added, “And it just seemed so surreal that this person who had just been through everything was apologizing to me for a movie. “Look, I love what I’m doing, but it’s ruining her life and she’s kicking still sticks up for me and takes the blame.”

Last year, one of the seven jurors who unanimously ruled in Depp’s favor over Heard said she simply “didn’t come across as credible” and stressed that “social media had no influence on us.”

“Some people said we were bribed. That is not true. Social media had no influence on us. “We followed the evidence,” he told Good Morning America.

“We didn’t take anything from the outside into account.” [the courtroom]. We just looked at the evidence. These were very serious allegations involving a lot of money. So we didn’t take it lightly.’

The tipping point for many on the jury was when the Spanish-based Texan claimed she had only “pledged” to donate her entire $7 million divorce settlement to charity, despite previously claiming she had done so in 2018 Dutch television and in their UK 2020 defamation case.

“The fact is she didn’t disclose much of it at all,” the juror said. “It was disingenuous.”

The juror also wasn’t sure why a domestic violence victim bought her allegedly abusive 60-year-old husband a large knife marked “Until Death.”

“If you have an abused wife or spouse, why would you buy the other person, the ‘aggressor,’ a knife?” he asked.

“If you really wanted to help Johnny Depp get off drugs, why are you doing drugs around him?”

Another key moment in the trial was when Amber accidentally referred to her makeup palette as a “bruising kit” to cover up the alleged abuse.

“Not a bruise kit, it’s a theatrical makeup kit, a color correction kit.” “But I called it my bruise kit,” Heard tried to explain.

“You weren’t beaten; You’ve been hit. “I’m sorry I hit you like that, but I didn’t hit you,” Heard admitted in an audio recording.

“I didn’t fucking finish you.” I fucking hit you. I don’t know what the movement of my actual hand was. But you’re alright. I didn’t hurt you. I didn’t hit you. I hit you. I’m not going to sit here and talk about it, am I? You are. That’s the difference between me and you. You’re damned, baby. You’re such a baby. Grow up, Johnny.’
