Amid the positions of figures of the Brazilian left in defense of Hamas terrorism, social networks and newspapers have highlighted the controversial speeches of journalist Breno Altman, founder of the Opera Mundi website. Altman also wrote a column on the PT’s official website.

The journalist came under fire for celebrating Hezbollah’s entry into the war against Israel shortly after the conflict broke out and comparing Jews to rats.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attacks on Israel carried out on Saturday (14) in Shebaa Farms, an area on the border between Israel and Lebanon.

Breno Altman also complained that the Brazilian government wanted to hold both sides of the conflict equally responsible. The journalist defends the narrative that Hamas is only reacting against Israel’s alleged colonialism.

For Altman, it is not enough not to call Hamas terrorists, it is necessary to condemn Israel’s reactions to the massacre of unarmed civilians, including women, the elderly and children, planned and carried out by terrorists.

Speech during an event organized by the Palestinian community in São Paulo, Sunday (15). The journalist said that “the colonial state of Israel is an enemy of humanity” and “the incarnation of one of the most brutal racist doctrines of our time.”

The journalist is followed on social media by personalities such as MPs Guilherme Boulos (PSOLSP) and Gleisi Hoffmann (National President of the PT), as well as ministers in the PT government and President Lula himself.

Jewish origin

Altman is Jewish and has been active on social media and participated in antiIsrael protests.

The journalist Breno Altman is the son of the lawyer and journalist Max Altman, who died in 2016. Max was a Pole of Jewish origin and a member of the Brazilian Communist Party (PCdoB) and the Workers’ Party (PT).

According to Breno, his father “devoted his existence to the fight for socialism, proletarian revolution and antiimperialist solidarity.”

Passage through Lava Jato

Breno Altman, a critic of Lava Jato and a close confidante of José Dirceu (PT), was forcibly involved in one of the developments of the operation in 2016, under accusations of being the link between PT and the businessman Ronan Maria Pinto, who was accused of involvement was convicted in a corruption scheme in public transport in Santo André (SP) during the term of office of the assassinated mayor Celso Daniel (PT). Altman was acquitted by the operation’s then judge, Sergio Moro.

A year after he was forced to testify, Altman said Lava Jato’s “secret” was to “turn every investigation into a show, into a big media spectacle and to provoke social upheaval through the media.”

Old friendships

When José Dirceu recently took part in a discussion about the war on the Opera Mundi channel, he criticized Lula for initially calling the attacks on Israel “terrorist,” although he did not mention Hamas in the statement.

The discussion was moderated by Altman and also included the participation of PT activist and master of political economy, Rose Martins, and former PT member and founder of the PSTU, Valério Arcary.
