Relief pitcher Trevor May launched an extraordinary attack on Oakland A’s owner John Fisher in announcing his retirement Monday.

Baseball’s last dive bar: Farewell to the crumbling Oakland Coliseum

May, an avid gamer, confirmed his retirement during a Twitch stream. He played for the A’s during the 2023 season. The team plays in a dilapidated stadium, has one of the lowest payrolls in the MLB and has lost 112 games in 2023, giving it the worst record in baseball. To the fury of fans in Oakland, Fisher also plans to move the franchise to Las Vegas after the 2024 season.

On Monday, May delivered a scathing assessment of Fisher’s leadership.

“Sell the team, dude. … Sell it, man,” he said. “Let someone who is actually proud of the things they own own something. There are actually people who don’t give a shit about the game. Let her do it. Take mom and dad’s money [Fisher’s parents founded Gap] somewhere else, idiot.

In his farewell speech, May thanked everyone present “except one” before heaping criticism on Fisher.

“If you want to be a greedy idiot, then own it,” May said. “There’s nothing weaker than being afraid of cameras… Do what you’re going to do, bro. Anyway, you’re a billionaire, it exists, you have all this power – you shouldn’t have any because you don’t deserve any of it, but whatever.”

May, 34, also played for the Minnesota Twins and New York Mets during his career.
