The Reina Sofía Museum shows symbolic arpilleras from Chile

As the institution, which houses, among other things, Guernika paintings by Pablo Picasso, reports today, it is a contribution from Conflict Textiles, led by its founder Roberta Bacic; and researcher Marina Vinyes.

During the “Sew to Heal” event on October 21st, the Arpilleras will be presented, offering the reflection and denunciation of various groups of women who contributed to memory through their art during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990). collective.

The pieces, which will be kept indefinitely in the museum collection, were acquired by the Reina Sofía Museum Foundation, led by Carolina González Castro.

The burlap “No to the referendum, we can’t even give an opinion” was purchased in Germany in 2009 by Conflict Textiles curator Roberta Bacic and represents the referendum that took place in the southern country that year.

Another Arpillera, Caín, donde es tu corazón? (1983), provides an approach to the way religious groups in Chile worked on human rights violations.

The piece We Don’t Have Access to Public Services (1984) was created in a community workshop in Santiago, while the Arpillera Carabineros, who oppressed the residents with water cannons, was produced in 1987 by the Vicaría de la Solidaridad workshop.

In addition to these four pieces, Roberta Bacic is offering to donate to the museum a fifth, more recent Arpillera, Map of Chile, 2009, which came into her hands as a personal gift from the artist Aurora Ortiz.
