“The population is demanding the possibility of leaving Gaza, something that has never happened before,” said Sarah Château, Médecins Sans Frontières’ head of operations in Palestine, on franceinfo on Tuesday, October 17. “The situation is unprecedented.” The residents of Gaza are very attached to their country, “they have always wanted to stay there,” testifies the manager. However, they now demand to “cross the border” to gain access to “a place of safety.” (…) This describes the unthinkable.

Sarah Château also reports on the working conditions of her organization and life on site: “We have already reached the survival phase. (…) We have just made our last donation of medication, for example we no longer have anesthetics in hospitals,” she explains to franceinfo. Amid a “significant” influx of injured, nurses are forced to “sort patients.”

“We are receiving several requests from the Israeli authorities to evacuate hospitals, but we cannot transport all the wounded,” she added. According to her, “there are no hospital structures capable of receiving them” in the south of the Gaza Strip, a part of the territory where, moreover, “not a night goes by without being bombarded.”

Lack of medication

The official advocates that trucks carrying food and medicine be allowed to enter the area so that “the population can survive.” In response to the Hamas attack on Israel on Saturday, October 7, the Gaza Strip was bombed by the Jewish state, which urged the population to seek refuge in the south of the territory.
