Chocolates have become the subject of disputes between Bolsonaro groups on social media. It all started after Lacta sponsored influencer Felipe Neto through Bis Biscuit last week. The YouTuber is a staunch critic of the former federal government and is therefore considered one of the “biggest enemies” of the friendly former government. Since then, supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) launched a campaign to boycott the brand and promote KitKat, a Nestl candy that also includes chocolatecovered wafer plates.

Over the weekend there were several posts with the hashtag “Bis Nunca Mais”. The campaign brought together big names from the right, such as federal MP Nikolas Ferreira (PLMG). The former president of the Fundação Cultural Palmares Srgio Camargo (PLSP) published a series of publications against bischocolate.

On the other hand, government senators Randolfe Rodrigues (Sem PartidoAP) and Humberto Costa (PTPE) posed with chocolates in support of Felipe Neto. Fans of the influencer called “Owls ask for Bis” as a reference to the name of the YouTuber’s fandom.

In addition to criticizing Bis, Bolsonaro supporters also published several images promoting KitKat, such as a video in which journalist Janana Xavier says Nestlé’s chocolate has a “taste of childhood” and is “much better than Bis.” However, some internet users saved a 2021 campaign in which the brand celebrates LGBTQIAP+ pride.

The commercials feature pairs of two men and two women, transgender people and drag queens. The campaign’s slogan is “Give tradition a break” and “Pride never takes a break,” with a nod to the brand’s slogan “Have a break, have a KitKat.” It was enough for the brand to be named “Siegel”.

“Kitkat is also a sealing company, wake up guys, you are being manipulated,” wrote YouTuber Monark. While many Bolsonarists say they follow their argument and promise to abstain from “all chocolate” or only consume bread, others criticize Monark and reveal that the reason for the boycott is not the brand but the figurehead. “The problem is not KitKat, but Felipe Neto. “If he loses his sponsorship, like he has with several people, it will be a success,” said one profile.

KitKat publishes several posts on social media praising diversity. The Bis campaign is still on the air. In a press release, Lacta/Mondelez reported that “the hiring of influencers is solely related to their relevance in the gamer and entertainment universe, without any connection or political support of any kind.” Reaffirmed as a leader in the snack market in Brazil and around the world Mondelez has absolute respect for diversity of opinion.”
