The now 82-year-old singer and presenter Serge Laprade has decided to live his life in the open air.
He married Daniel Arseneault, his lover of the last 50 years, last week.
For decades he introduced him as his friend and his manager.
“I have two lives. Daniel was silent, in the sense that he preferred to stay in the shadows and let me take the lead and not mess anything up,” explains Serge Laprade.
Her family was unaware of their relationship for many years.
“This wouldn’t have happened in my family,” Mr. Laprade said.
For him, the public and his career were more important.
“I had a huge female audience. If it hurts my career, it’s my job, I don’t want that,” he recalls.
He explains that he was waiting for society to change. After years of living out of sight, Daniel and Serge got married last week.
They want to send a message to young people.
“I think of all the young people today who are not being listened to by their parents, by their friends, who are searching for themselves. Our goal was simply to say that it is possible for two people to meet who are happy and who are not a heterosexual couple,” the newlyweds explain together.
