In October 2023, 10 new professorships were started at the TU Vienna.
Fazel ANSARI
Univ.Prof. Dr.-Ing. Fazel Ansari is a university professor of data-driven maintenance management at the Institute of Management Sciences of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Business Sciences since October 1, 2023.
Ansari comes from Persia, where he studied mechanical engineering at the University of Tehran, opens an external URL in a new window. For his master’s degree in mechatronics he moved to the University of Siegen, opens an external URL in a new window in North Rhine-Westphalia and received his doctorate there in 2014 (summa cum laude) with the dissertation “Meta-analysis of knowledge for Continuous Improvement of Maintenance Cost Control”. Fazel Ansari’s research is part of the Industrial Engineering area of the Institute of Management Sciences, where he has headed the “Production and Maintenance Management” research group since 2018. There he addresses topics relating to Industry 4.0 and the digital transformation of, among other things, production processes, as well as production planning and knowledge-based maintenance optimization.
Dietmar FEICHTINGER
Univ.Prof. Arch. Dipl.-Ing. Dietmar Feichtinger has been a university professor of construction and building design at the Institute of Architecture and Design, Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning, since October 1, 2023.
Feichtinger comes from Bruck an der Mur and studied architecture (with honors) at the Graz University of Technology, opens an external URL in a new window, where he graduated in 1988. His career then took him to Paris, where he founded the architecture firm Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes in 1994. There has also been a branch in Vienna since 2002.
Dietmar Feichtinger is head of the structural engineering, construction and design research department at the Institute of Architecture and Design. There he deals with topics such as “conversion rather than new construction”, reuse of materials and structures and adaptable modular construction.
Amálio FERNANDEZ-PACHECO CHICON
Univ.Prof. Amalio Fernandez-Pacheco Chicon, MSc PhD is University Professor of Interfaces and Heterostructures of Advanced Materials at the Institute of Applied Physics of the Faculty of Physics since October 1, 2023.
Fernandez-Pacheco Chicon is from Zaragoza, Spain, and studied physics at the University of Zaragoza, opens an external URL in a new window. There he received his doctorate summa cum laude in 2009 with his dissertation on “Electrical conduction and magnetic properties of nanoconstrictions and nanowires created by focused electron/ion beam and Fe₃O₄ thin films”. This was followed by a stay abroad, in Great Britain, for almost 10 years, and only returned to Spain in 2019.
Amalio Fernandez-Pacheco Chicon focuses on the research area “Physics of three-dimensional nanomaterials”, which he also directs. There he is working on three-dimensional magnetic nanostructures, which will be used especially for future “green” computing technologies.
Tim LANGEN
Univ.Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Dipl.-Fis. Tim Langen has worked at the Atomic Institute of the Faculty of Physics since October 1, 2023 as a university professor of experimental quantum technology.
Langen comes from Rhineland-Palatinate and completed his physics studies at the University of Mainz, opens an external URL in a new window with honors. He completed his PhD in 2013 as part of the Vienna Doctoral Program in Complex Quantum Systems (CoQuS) at TU Vienna with a dissertation on “None-equilibrium dynamics of one-dimensional Bose gases”.
Tim Langen works in the research area of Cold Molecule Physics and Quantum Technologies at the Atomic Institute. There he is researching cold atoms and molecules for quantum science and technology. This includes experiments with dipolar molecules to use them to study new forms of quantum matter and for precise measurements of fundamental physical laws.
Kurt MATYAS
Univ.Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Technical Dr. Kurt Matyas has been a university professor of engineering management at the Institute of Management Sciences at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Business Sciences since October 1, 2023.
Matyas comes from Vienna and studied mechanical engineering at TU Vienna. After completing his studies, he remained loyal to the TU Vienna and was employed as an associate since 2001. University professor at the Institute of Management Sciences. From 2004 to 2007 he was vice-rector of studies and from 2008 to 2015 dean of studies at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Business Sciences. From 2015, he was Vice-Rector for Studies and Teaching for two Rectoral terms until September 2023.
Kurt Matyas works in the research area of Industrial Engineering, where he deals with integrated production and supply chain/logistics management on the one hand, and quality and process management on the other. At the Academy of Continuing Education at TU Wien, he works together with engineer Mag. Hannes Hunschofsky on the Executive MBA in Engineering Management, offered in cooperation with the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
Hannes MIKULA
Univ.Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Technical Dr. Hannes Mikula has been working as a university professor of chemical biology at the Institute of Applied Synthetic Chemistry of the Faculty of Technical Chemistry since October 1, 2023.
Mikula comes from Burgenland. He studied technical chemistry at the TU Vienna and completed his doctoral studies here in 2014 with a doctorate sub auspiciis on the topic “Advanced synthesis of conjugated metabolites and structural investigations of Fusarium and Alternaria mycotoxins”.
The Zukunftskolleg, coordinated by Hannes Mikula since 2019 and funded by the FWF, allowed him to obtain a professional position in the topic “Chemical Biology” in 2021. A START award was also acquired in 2021, followed by an ERC Starting Grant the following year. After completing his habilitation process in 2022, he successfully completed his professional career by qualifying as an associate professor.
Hannes Mikula conducts research in the field of organic and biological chemistry at the Institute of Applied Synthetic Chemistry and directs the Molecular Chemistry and Chemical Biology research group.
Thomas POHL
Univ.Prof. Dipl.-Fis. Dr.rer.nat. Thomas Pohl has been a university professor of Light-Matter Interaction Theory at the Theoretical Institute of the Faculty of Physics since October 1, 2023.
Pohl studied physics at the Humboldt University of Berlin, opens an external URL in a new window. He carried out his doctoral thesis at the Max Planck Institute, opens an external URL in a new window for physics of complex systems in Dresden and at TU Dresden, where he received his doctorate in 2005 with a dissertation on “Relaxation dynamics of ultracold plasmas”.
In his research, Thomas Pohl deals with the physics of individual quantum systems and their collective behavior, which can result from mutual interactions and strong coupling to light.
Harald STÜHLINGER
Univ.Prof. Dr.sc.ETH Harald Stühlinger has been working as a university professor for art history at the Institute for Art History, Building Research and Monument Preservation at the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning since October 1, 2023.
Stühlinger comes from Kapfenberg and studied architecture at the TU Vienna as well as art history at the University of Vienna, opens an external URL in a new window. After a short period as an assistant at the Institute of Art History at the Vienna University of Technology, he moved to Switzerland in 2004, where he successfully completed his doctoral studies at ETH Zurich, opens an external URL in a new window in 2013 with the theme “The Competition on the Vienna Ringstrasse. Creation and Interpretation,” he concluded.
Harald Stühlinger’s main area of research is art history. There he addresses questions about the construction of culture, the relationship of media to architecture and urban development, as well as questions of aesthetics in the post-fossil era.
Jiehua Chen
Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Jiehua Chen has been working as an Associate Professor of Algorithmic Social Choice at the Institute of Logic and Computing, Faculty of Computer Science since October 1, 2023.
Jiehua Chen studied computer science at TU Berlin, opens an external URL in a new window and received his PhD there in 2016 with his dissertation on “Exploring Structure in Computationally Hard Voting Problems”. After a short postdoctoral experience at several universities, she moved to Austria in 2019. At TU Vienna, she obtained a professional position on the topic “Algorithmic Social Choice”, which she has now completed by qualifying as an associate professor.
Jiehua Chen’s research focus is the Algorithms and Complexity research area, where he deals with topics related to the parameterized complexity of combinatorial problems, as well as their design and analysis, which are related, for example, to optimization problems in the context of graphs and hypergraphs. or computer-supported social choices.
Yuri Troy
Univ.Prof. Arch. Mag.arch. Juri Troy is a university professor of wooden construction and design in urban spaces at the Institute of Architecture and Design of the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning since October 1, 2023.
Troy comes from Bregenz and studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, which he completed in 2002. He founded his first architectural office in Vienna in 2003, officially known as Juri Troy Architects since 2011, based in Vienna and Bregenz, focusing on “wood in architecture”.
