John Stamos reveals he suffered sexual abuse as a child: ‘I shouldn’t have dealt with those feelings’

(CNN) – John Stamos revealed in a new interview Wednesday that he is a survivor of sexual abuse.

Speaking to People, Stamos discussed an excerpt from his upcoming memoir If You Would Have Tell Me, in which he reflects on the abuse he suffered as a child at the hands of a babysitter.

“It was like you were playing dead to make them stop. But it wasn’t completely aggressive,” he said, adding: “I don’t know, it wasn’t good.”

Stamos said he was 10 or 11 years old when the abuse occurred and kept the incident to himself at the time.

“I didn’t have to deal with those feelings,” he said.

Although Stamos remembered the incident “faintly” over time, he said, he admitted that “it was always there, but I kept it away like people do, right?”

He told the outlet that he would have to “write a book” to recognize that wrongdoing occurred.

When contacted by CNN, a representative for Stamos confirmed the story.

The 60-year-old “Full House” actor is now a protective father to his five-year-old son Billy, whom he shares with his wife Caitlin McHugh.

“If I find out that someone is doing something like that to my child, it’s a whole different story,” he said.

Stamos is strongly committed to protecting children from abuse and has been a ChildHelp ambassador for over 20 years. The organization helps victims of child abuse through education, treatment and prevention programs.

According to an official synopsis, Stamos’ memoir is described as a “universal story of friendship, love, loss and the courage to embrace love again.”

Stamos said he wanted to be “100 percent forthcoming” in the book.

“If You Would Have Tell Me” will be released on October 24th.
