France regrets the failure of the UN resolution on Gaza

Paris, October 19 (Prensa Latina) The French Foreign Ministry today regretted the failure of a draft resolution focused on the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip to pass in the UN Security Council due to the US veto.

In its daily press release, the Quai d’Orsay made no secret of the fact that it hoped that the body of 15 member countries would adopt the initiative presented in New York by Brazil, “because we wanted the international community to express itself in a single form can.” Vote on the basis of this text, which seemed measured to us.”

After Hamas’ deadly attack on Israeli territory on October 7, Tel Aviv began indiscriminate bombings of the Gaza Strip and a total blockade, and also ordered the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of civilians in the densely populated area, ostensibly as a prelude to a ground offensive. .

The draft resolution called for the lifting of Israel’s order for civilians and UN personnel to leave areas it plans to attack on the grounds of eliminating Hamas.

It also called for humanitarian pauses to allow aid to reach Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where they lack food, water and electricity, and encouraged the establishment of humanitarian corridors.

In the Council, twelve countries approved the text, but the United States vetoed it and, as one of the five powers with this prerogative, the initiative automatically failed.

According to France, another country with controversial veto power, the project met its expectations, in particular due to “the unequivocal condemnation of Hamas’s terrorist attacks, the need to apply international humanitarian law (…) and respond to the fundamental demands of the population of Gaza and the political perspective (…)”.

From Washington’s perspective, the document was blocked because it did not reflect Israel’s right to defend itself.
