St-Pierre, who has helped democratize and popularize his sport across Canada, thanked organizers in a post on social media. He and his comrades also received a standing ovation from the audience.

The Saint-Isidore native has moved into the ranks of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) greats by winning 26 of his 28 fights. Above all, he fought legendary battles with Nick Diaz, Matt Serra and BJ Penn and won a total of three titles.

He retired in 2017 after defeating Michael Bisping for the welterweight belt. “GSP” was scheduled to return to the Octagon on December 14th for an exhibition grappling bout, but an injury forced the cancellation.
