Smith’s appearance with her children Pinkett Smith, Jaden and Willow, as well as her son Trey Smith from a previous relationship, apparently came as a surprise to Pinkett Smith. It came at the end of a lecture on his autobiography Worthy.

Pinkett Smith noted that family, including aunts and uncles as well as Will Smith’s mother and sister, were in town to celebrate his mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris’ 70th birthday.

Smith called their relationship “brutal and beautiful.”

“It’s a clumsy public experiment in unconditional love,” Will commented, causing Pinkett Smith to double in laughter.

Pinkett Smith told the Baltimore Sun that their estrangement is a thing of the past and that she and Smith have been working to repair their relationship over the past 18 months.

“Will and I are doing well,” Pinkett Smith told CNN’s Laura Coates, who moderated Wednesday night’s chat. “All the people who don’t understand and have nothing to say must resign.”

“The truth is, I won’t leave Will and he won’t leave me. We have been on a massive journey. And I’m happier than I’ve ever been,” she added.

The book by Pinkett Smith, who first shared the explosive news of her breakup with NBC’s Hoda Kotb, details her marriage, her move to Hollywood, her unconventional upbringing of her children and offers her perspective on the slap in the face that hit her. Smith attacked comedian Chris Rock during the 2022 Academy Awards over a joke about Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. The actress announced in 2018 that she was suffering from alopecia.

Pinkett Smith told The Associated Press that she feels free since speaking out about her split from Smith.

“Honestly, it’s a weight off my shoulders,” he said in an interview with the AP this week. “It’s been very interesting since the Oscars how such an intense event can bring us closer together, and I would say after that we really went in and dug deeper and arrived at this beautiful place that we are in now.”
