Canada withdraws 41 of its diplomats from India

On Thursday, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly announced the withdrawal of 41 Canadian diplomats from India: Joly said the Indian government had threatened to lift the immunity of the diplomats in question (i.e. the treatment and protection measures for a country’s representatives) by Friday. foreign state), and last month the Indian government had already asked Canada to reduce its diplomatic presence in the country. The 41 Canadian diplomats who left India represented the majority of those present in the country: there are currently 21 remaining, whose immunity the Indian government threatens to lift by October 20.

Tensions have been running high between India and Canada for weeks, largely due to the Canadian government’s allegations against the Indian government over its alleged involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian Sikh leader, in June. Sikh separatism has also been a source of tension on other occasions between India and countries hosting large Sikh communities, such as Canada: the Indian government has always viewed the movement as a threat to its national security.
