Biden compares Putin to Hamas, promises help for Ukraine and Israel

The US President will send to Congress a request for funding of $60 billion for the European country and $14 billion for Israelis

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, announced this Thursday (September 19, 2023) that the country would provide financial assistance to Israel and Ukraine. According to the international news agency Portal, $60 billion (R$303 billion) will be spent on the war in Europe and $14 billion (R$70 billion) on the conflict in the Middle East.

The Democrat stated that the budget request would be sent to Congress on October 6th (October 20th). He also said he would support the U.S.’s “crucial partners,” pointing to Israel and Ukraine. He will also finance the “national security needs” of Americans. According to him, it is an “investment” that will pay dividends “for generations” in the security of North America and “contribute to building a safer world.”

In his speech, the American also compared the extremist group Hamas to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He said that both were committed to the “annihilation” of neighboring democracies and that the extremist group’s stated goal was the “destruction of the State of Israel and the death of the Jewish people.”

He reiterated the need to provide humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and again denied that the explosion at AlAhli Hospital was the Israelis’ responsibility he did not directly blame Hamas or Islamic Jihad.

Biden indicated that during his trip to Israel he spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about reducing civilian casualties due to the conflict. The US president also said that the country must also follow the “rules” of war and cannot be “blinded” by anger.

The Democrat supported a twostate solution for Israel and Palestine. According to him, the US will continue to defend the Palestinians’ right to selfdetermination: “Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people. The group uses Palestinian civilians as human shields and inflicts great suffering on innocent Palestinian families,” he said.

Mentioning the wars in Ukraine and Israel, the American explained that if Russia prevails in the conflict in Europe, “aggressors” around the world, including in the Middle East, would be emboldened.

“History has taught us that terrorists, when they face no consequences for their acts of terror, and dictators, who face no consequences for their aggression, end up causing more chaos, death and destruction,” he said.

Biden also used his speech to reject prejudice against Muslims and Jews, citing the wave of attacks sparked by the escalation of conflict in the Middle East. He recalled the increase in Islamophobia in the United States after the attacks of September 11, 2001.
