The 37-year-old Just Dance hitmaker joined the group on stage for the encore to sing their duet “Sweet Sounds of Heaven.”

The Rolling Stones Hackney Diamonds review by ADRIAN THRILLS

The Rolling Stones: Hackney Diamonds

Verdict: Back with a bang

Evaluation:

The supporting cast includes Elton John and Paul McCartney, but it’s the energetic artistry of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood – a combined 235 years old – that lifts the first album of new Stones songs in 18 years.

They call themselves “the greatest rock and roll band in the world,” and this is a late-career masterpiece.

They made the 12-track album – the title is Cockney slang for broken glass – with a new collaborator, Andrew Watt, and the 33-year-old New Yorker does an excellent job. It adds modern touches but respects the well-known strengths.

Current single “Angry” is a weak link, a pastiche of “Start Me Up” with the feel of “By Numbers,” but the other rock numbers give the band their best shot. Charlie Watts, who died in 2021, added distinctive drums to two songs in his final sessions.

“Get Close” is reminiscent of 1972’s “Exile On Main Street,” and McCartney delivers a distorted bass solo on “Bite My Head Off.”

But it’s the big ballads that give this long-overdue return its five-star rating. Jagger is fully engaged in the beautiful, country-tinged track “Dependen On You”. Richards sings the lead role on Tell Me Straight.

The penultimate track, “Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” a duet between Jagger and Lady Gaga, is a tour de force – an epic reminiscent of 1969’s “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”

If this is the last time – and I wouldn’t bet on it – the Stones will perform in style.

Hackney Diamonds is the Rolling Stones’ 31st studio album and the first without their late bandmate Charlie Watts.

Last month, The Rolling Stones paid tribute to Charlie, who died in 2021, at a special live event with Jimmy Fallon in London.

On stage, Keith reflected on Charlie’s death and said: “Since Charlie’s gone it’s different, he’s number four.”

The guitarist continued: “He’s missed, of course he’s incredibly missed, but thanks to Charlie we have Steve Jordan who was recommended to him in case anything happened to him.”

“He was a friend of ours, so he was a natural progression. Without Charlie’s blessing it would have been much more difficult.”

Along with Mick and Keith, he appeared on every studio album of the band. He was widely considered one of the greatest drummers of all time.
