Spider-Man 2 developer addresses debate over game cost and length

Spider-Man 2’s creative director has addressed the debate over the video game’s cost and length that sparked before its release.

Fans looking forward to the latest from Insomniac Games were thrown into conversation when someone playing ahead of the October 20th release date leaked that achieving the Platinum Trophy (essentially 100% completion) took around 25-30 hours have. Some fans commented that this was similar to the original game and was therefore fine, while others were upset after deeming Spider-Man 2 to be too short given its full price. Five IGN team members gave their completion times in our How Long is Spider-Man 2? known. Article. Our fastest player completed the story in 18 hours. Our “slowest” player spent 25 hours before the credits rolled.

“For us it really comes down to the experience we want to deliver with the quality we want to achieve,” Insomniac’s Bryan Intihar told the BBC. “Of course there’s a certain level of ‘Hey, someone’s spending this much money on a game,’ so we want to give them an experience that’s worth it.”

Spider-Man 2 is a full-price game for the PlayStation 5, meaning it costs $69.99. That’s the same price as Elden Ring (which has a platinum time of 80 to 100 hours), Baldur’s Gate 3 (over 100 hours), and Diablo 4 (150 to 200 hours).

It’s also the same price as many critically acclaimed games that can be 100% completed in similar or less time, and Intihar said Insomniac is less about completion time and more about quality. “Our job is to make sure you feel like it’s worth the money and the investment, no matter how long it takes,” he said.

However, Insomniac will be looking to add even more value to Spider-Man 2 post-release. By the end of 2023, it will release a New Game Plus mode alongside some other new features, although no full DLC has been confirmed yet.

In our 8/10 review of the game, IGN said: “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 delivers Insomniac’s best story yet and, despite the inadequate open world, is a reliably entertaining superhero power trip.”
