Samsung’s annual Developer Conference (SDC) showcased the latest cross-device experiences and services enabled by a cross-platform, truly connected ecosystem.
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today held its annual Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. In its ninth conference, the developer and partner event focused on Samsung’s commitment to innovation and introduced its platforms, including Bixby, Samsung Knox, SmartThings and Tizen, to developers.
During the conference, Samsung demonstrated new ways to create connected experiences through its multi-device ecosystem, notably expanded with new SmartThings connectivity features and the updated Samsung Knox Matrix. The event also unveiled One UI 6, the latest version of the mobile user interface that offers a range of custom styles and new features for a complete smartphone experience.
“More than 500 million Samsung products are sold every year and the number of people using Samsung accounts exceeds 600 million. For us, this is both a great achievement and a great responsibility,” he said Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice President, General Manager and Head of Device eXperience (DX) Division of Samsung Electronics. “Samsung technologies connect countless people, products and services. I believe that if you, our developers and our partners, join us on this innovation journey, we can create greater opportunities and a better future together.”
Managing Director JH Han also emphasized that sustainability and safety are at the heart of Samsung’s latest updates, as both values are important for responsible innovation in the age of hyperconnectivity.
Smart homes are more connected than ever
Samsung’s vision of the connected home is deeply rooted in SmartThings and open innovation. Since implementing the Matter standard last year, the total number of SmartThings users who have connected compatible products and services has grown to more than 290 million. NOW, SmartThings Home API[1] makes it easier than ever for developers to build apps based on SmartThingsSmartThings Context API offers new ways to use AI and sensor technology to improve the user experience.
Samsung integrates the functionality SmartThings Hub into its existing and new products, including Samsung soundbars and smart TVs, allowing users to quickly and easily launch their smart home products from their connected devices. This cross-platform network also means that when it comes time to swap or add a device, there is a powerful network of other devices ready to keep the smart home running. These experiences will be further enhanced through collaboration with Samsung Aqarawho joined Samsung on stage to explain how its Internet of Things (IoT) sensors work with SmartThings to create more intuitive and accessible smart homes.
Samsung also announced the second generation SmartTag2 during the SDC. With a battery life of up to 700 days[1]Thanks to Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity, the SmartTag2 can locate lost items even in the basement and has an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance.
Bixby also expands its capabilities with SmartThings. This year, Samsung announced more intuitive controls for multi-device environments. Now, even if multiple devices are connected in the same room, Bixby will recognize the best device for each command. In the future, Bixby will evolve to provide personalized experiences with easy controls by recognizing users’ language and optimizing their controls.
As more connected devices pair to create these new experiences, security and privacy are a key concern. Last year Samsung introduced Knox matrix, Samsung’s blockchain-based security system that protects connected devices in an ecosystem. This year, Samsung is updating key features of Knox Matrix, including credential syncing and chain of trust. Samsung also offers Knox vault for other devices including Samsung QLED Neo 8K TVs in 2023 and select Galaxy A series smartphones launching with One UI 6 or later in 2024. Designed for the age of hyperconnectivity, these advances aim to provide users with greater convenience and choice, giving them the opportunity to do what they love in complete safety.
SE Tizen: Maximizing the opportunities offered to developers
Over the last decade, Tizen powered digital displays such as televisions, appliances, monitors and signs. This year, Samsung announced that Tizen will power even more Samsung devices, including home appliances with 7-inch screens, while improving the AI-on experience the device and at Home AI Edge Hub. Home AI Edge technology allows low-computing devices to request AI services from high-computing devices in the home, such as CPUs and neural processing units.
Tizen also powers Samsung’s immersive gaming experiences, including the Samsung gaming portal which now supports 3,000 games on the cloud platform, a 300% increase since its launch last year. Furthermore with HDR10+ GAMING and Samsung’s IRIS tool for graphics developers, there’s never been a better time to explore the virtual worlds of gaming on Tizen.
Tizen also offers better support for open source semiconductor architectures RISC-V and programming language RUSTas well as new features such as Remote testing lab to test apps and experiences on Samsung Cloud TV devices.
One UI 6 Activate your Galaxy device the way you want
The new interface One user interface 6 offers more options to simplify navigation on your smartphone, simplify management and give you a little more convenience. It includes a Quick panel redesigned with an updated, intuitive look and grouped settings that make it easier to use. One UI 6 also introduced a new exclusive font, One UI Sans, to improve readability on digital screens. For photos, One UI 6 analyzes the photo you’re looking at and suggests the most relevant AI editing tools – all in one easy-to-access tool. And with Samsung Studio, you can make multi-step edits to your video, such as: B. Add text, stickers and music exactly where you want and at the desired time in the video.
