The Hamas group proposed that the Israeli government release some of the 203 hostages in exchange for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The information comes from the BBC.

According to the British broadcaster, the members involved in the negotiation are still discussing the agreement. The hostages were captured by Hamas members during the attack in southern Israel on October 7.

According to the Israeli Defense Ministry, the list of hostages includes citizens of Israel, the United Kingdom, the United States, Russia and Brazil. However, Itamaraty said it had not yet received any information about Brazilian hostages.

Understand the main points of the war between Israel and Hamas:

  • Hamas is a military, political and social organization that has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2007, when it won the Palestinian parliamentary elections. The group is considered a terrorist organization by European Union countries and the United States;
  • The Gaza Strip has been under an intensive land, air and sea blockade since 2007, with restrictions on the import of basic goods, and is considered an “openair prison” by analysts, researchers and human rights organizations;
  • Since 1948, Palestinians have been demanding the creation of their state (which includes the West Bank).
  • On October 7, Hamas carried out the largest wave of attacks against Israel, resulting in 1,400 Israeli deaths;
  • Benjamin Netanyahu declares war on Hamas and speaks of the group’s destruction;
  • Israel tightens the blockade of Gaza by cutting off electricity, fuel and water supplies, creating an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in Gaza;
  • Hamas threatens to kill Israeli hostages in retaliation for Israeli military response;
  • Israel prepares land invasion of Gaza;
  • Organizations warn of the risk of a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza. With hospitals and morgues overcrowded, Palestinians are using ice cream trucks and food coolers to store corpses.
  • 1 million Palestinians left their homes to seek refuge in the southern Gaza Strip; the total population of the Gaza Strip is 2.3 million, of which 47% are children;
  • A bomb attack on Batista AlAhli Hospital in Gaza killed hundreds; Israel accuses Islamic Jihad of bombing;
  • The Palestinian representative to the United Nations called for an immediate ceasefire
  • The government has already repatriated 915 Brazilians as part of Operation Returning in Peace;
  • Brazil concludes an agreement on a ceasefire and the creation of a humanitarian corridor, which will be presented at a meeting of the UN Security Council.
