247 Alleged former judge and current senator Sérgio Moro (União BrasilPR) argued that the deaths of Palestinians in Gaza were “collateral damage” caused by Israeli attacks on military targets. In an interview with Rádio Cultura in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, Moro expressed regret over the deaths of civilians in the Gaza Strip, but stressed that such tragedies are generally the result of indirect damage from attacks on military targets. “Every civilian death in Gaza must be mourned. You see, this is usually the result of collateral damage from attacks on military targets. At least that’s what you see,” Moro said.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, Israeli attacks on Gaza resulted in the deaths of four thousand Palestinians, including 1,661 children, and 13,162 injured. Israeli operations included attacks on a hospital, which left 472 Palestinians dead, and on an Orthodox church, which left 18 people dead. There were also attacks on refugee camps in Gaza and the West Bank.

In the interview, Sérgio Moro showed his contempt for the performance of Brazilian diplomacy, which drafted a proposed resolution for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and received 12 positive votes in the UN Security Council. For the alleged former judge, Brazil is “not a protagonist” with great influence in the Middle East and therefore should not “interfere” in the conflicts in that region. “The fact that Brazil holds the presidency of the UN Security Council, it is a rotating presidency, it has been there 11 times, does not turn us into a temporary power. “Basically, whoever has the prerequisites there is best.” At the forefront of peacebuilding are the Arab countries and Israel, as well as the major powers present in the region such as the USA, Egypt and Jordan,” the senator added.
