MEXICO CITY, 9 May (EFE) .- The European Union (EU) Ambassador to Mexico, Gautier Mignot, reiterated on Monday the commitment that the company has with journalists and human rights defenders in that country so that they can carry out their safe work”.
“For many years we have been accompanying human rights defenders and journalists, through meetings, events, collaborative projects, training or visibility,” said the diplomat at a Europe Day press conference, in which he expressed his commitment to civil society and the authorities “will remain firm. “
He said that in the coming months the activities and actions to protect this sector of the population will be realized in meetings, visits, meetings and workshops.
“We will continue to organize events about the importance of protecting these voices (with the aim of ensuring that their work is respected,” he said.
Regarding the direction of this aid, Mignot clarified that his stance towards the authorities of Mexico, a country where nine journalists were murdered in the first months of 2022, is supportive and not belligerent.
“Our position is not one of confrontation, but one of support and cooperation (…) We know that there are very complex dynamics in Mexico that have to do with drug trafficking issues, with dark interests of those who do not like the work of these journalists that bring to light what is happening,” said the ambassador.
Mignot then shared that relations between Mexico and the European Union continue their “uptrend” and are recovering from the pandemic.
In this context, he recalled the visit to Mexico by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, last September.
On economic issues, he said that bilateral trade had increased by 3% over the last year and that the EU was the third largest supplier of goods to Mexico. “The future of the relationship is very important,” he said.
