(CNN) – Meryl Streep and her husband Don Gummer have been living apart for the past few years.
The news was confirmed by a rep for the actress in a statement to People on Saturday.
“Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for over six years and while they will always look out for each other, they have chosen to live separate lives,” a rep for Streep told the outlet.
CNN has reached out to the actor’s publicist for comment.
The three-time Oscar winner and sculptor Gummer married in 1978. They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary last month.
Streep and Gummer have been photographed together at numerous events over the years, but have largely kept their personal lives out of the press.
“There’s no blueprint for how to start a family — it’s always a big negotiation,” Streep told Vogue in 2002. “But I have a holistic need to work and have great romantic relationships in my life.” “I can’t imagine avoiding one for the other.”
Streep recognized Gummer in her best actress Oscar acceptance speech for her performance in 2012’s “The Iron Lady.”
“First I want to thank Don because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech there will be music playing and I want him to know that you have given me everything that I hold most dear in our lives.” Streep said at that moment.
The two are parents to four now grown children, a son, Henry, and three daughters, Mamie, Grace and Louisa.
