Cyva from Quarteto em Cy, founded with her sisters, dies at the age of 85

The singer Cyva from Quarteto em Cy died on Sunday evening (22) at the age of 85. The singer was part of the group formed in 1964 with sisters Cynara, Cybele and Cylene. She had been admitted to a hospital in Rio de Janeiro for a month to treat an infection but did not survive, according to her sister Cylene.

“She was very loved by everyone. And as my only living sister, I will miss her as a whole family,” says the sister Sheet.

After the deaths of Cyva de Sá Leite and Cynara in April this year, Cylene is the only remaining member of the original group. Cybele died in 2014.

Cyva, like her sisters, was born in Ibirataia, Bahia and, thanks to a sociocultural project in the state, she was introduced to music and founded one of the largest MPB vocal groups. In addition to the artistic side, Cyva completed her literature studies at the FFCH (Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities of the Federal University of Bahia).

The sisters met Vinicius de Moraes and received support from Carlos Lyra, who suggested the group’s name and with whom they performed at the beginning of their career. A year after the group was founded, they participated in the album “Afrosambas com Vinicius de Moraes and Baden Powell”. The quartet also recorded songs by Dorival Caymmi, Chico Buarque and other great composers.

The first album named after the group was recorded in 1964 and included compositions by names such as Edu Lobo, Ruy Guerra, Baden Powell, Moacyr Santos and Vinicius in the repertoire. The group had different formations for 40 years. In 1966 Cylene left the group and Renata Werneck replaced her. That year the group went to the United States, where they changed their name to Girls From Bahia, took part in programs, played shows and recorded LPs.

In 1967, Cynara and Cybele left the band because they didn’t want to try their luck on the American record market.

After a twoyear break, Cyva resumed the activities of the Quarteto em Cy in 1972 with Cynara, Sônia and Dorinha Tapajós. In this formation the group recorded “Antologia do sambacanção” (1975), “Resistência” (1977), “Querelas do Brasil” (1978), “Cobra de Glass” (1979) and “Em 1000 Kilohertz” (1980). on ).

In 1980 the group was refounded: Cybele returned to the group in Dorinha’s place. With this they recorded “Ponto de luz” (1983), “A arte do Quarteto em Cy” (1984), “A arte do Quarteto em Cy e MPB4” (1985) and “Show ao vivo com Vinicius e Toquinho”. ” (1986) and “To Make the Ones You Love Happy” (1989). In 2013, Cybele left the group and was replaced by Keyla Fogaça.

After Cybele’s death, Cyca founded the group with Cynara, Sônia and Corina.
