Three people were arrested, including one on armed assault charges, during protests in support of Israel and Gaza in Calgary, Alberta, on Sunday.
Hundreds of people demonstrated in two separate rallies on Sunday, one in support of Israel in front of the Olympic Square and the other in support of Palestine in front of City Hall, where several demonstrations in support of Palestinians had previously taken place.
Calgary police reported violent incidents early in the afternoon after noticing an “increasing escalation” that required police intervention at both demonstrations.
Three people were arrested in connection with those two gatherings, while one of the suspects was arrested for assault with a weapon, the Calgary Police Service said in a statement on its Twitter account.
“We do not tolerate those who endanger the safety of the public or the police,” the police said, noting that these arrests were associated with increasingly obvious disruptions to public order.
Calgary police did not specify at which demonstration these arrests occurred, other than to say in their press release that their mission is to protect the right to demonstrate.
