ROUYN-NORANDA, QC, October 23, 2023 /CNW/ – Not everywhere in Quebec it is possible to observe the Milky Way or marvel at the Northern Lights from a balcony! In Abitibi-Tmiscamingue we have this opportunity and to highlight the exceptional quality of the dark sky in our region, Aiguebelle National Park is launching a certification process to be recognized as an international dark sky park by DarkSky International.
Although the quality of the night sky in Aiguebelle National Park is very good, the national park is not completely protected from light pollution. This includes all annoyances caused by artificial light at night. However, several important bright poles alter the quality of the region’s night sky. Lighting devices aimed at the sky and colored blue contribute significantly to obscuring the stars, as suspended particles and gas molecules reflect and scatter this artificial light. Light pollution not only reduces the visibility of stars, but also negatively affects flora and fauna in various ways. In general, light can desynchronize animals’ natural biological rhythms or activity times.
As part of the certification process with DarkSky International, Aiguebelle National Park must position itself as a leader in protecting the night sky by raising awareness and requiring municipalities and industries to adopt good lighting practices. The national park must also become a model lighting conditions to limit light pollution within the boundaries of its territory. Thanks to a generous donation from IAMGOLD’s Westwood Mine, the park is able to meet DarkSky International’s criteria for outdoor lighting. In addition, the park must highlight the work to adapt the Fayolle Pit, a branch of IAMGOLD, to minimize the impact of its lighting on the night sky.
This is a good example of collaboration and commitment that we hope will spark a major movement as dark sky preservation affects everyone involved in the region.
