In a resolution adopted on Thursday, October 19, with 500 votes in favor, 21 against and 24 abstentions, MEPs condemned the Hamas attacks on October 7. A resolution to “eliminate the terrorist organization Hamas”
The resolution proposed this Thursday should not only support Israel, but also legitimize the elimination of the “terrorist organization Hamas”. Parliament demanded the release of all hostages they were holding. He also recognized Israel’s right to self-defense “as enshrined and limited by international law.”
MEPs nevertheless called for a “humanitarian pause” in the fighting, while stressing that attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure constitute a serious violation of international law.
After insisting on the resumption of a peace process, the European Parliament proposed the negotiated two-state solution for Israel and Palestine based on the 1967 lines. Jerusalem, a really sensitive issue in these talks, would thus serve as the capital for both states.
Independent investigation requested
Regarding the bombing of Al-Ahli Episcopal Hospital in Gaza, for which both sides blame each other, the European Parliament’s resolution called for an independent investigation to be launched.
MPs also called for investigations into the role of Iran, Qatar and Russia in funding and supporting terrorism in the region. The resolution also condemned Iran’s support for Hamas and other terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip.
Parliament finally reiterated its call for the entire Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Lebanon’s Hezbollah to be added to the EU list of terrorist groups.
More control over EU financial aid to Palestine
The resolution highlighted greater monitoring by the European Commission of EU financial assistance to Palestine. The aim is to ensure that no money flows to finance terrorism in the region.
The European Parliament nevertheless stressed the importance of increasing humanitarian aid to the civilian population in the Gaza Strip. Almost all MPs called on Egypt and Israel to work with the international community to establish humanitarian corridors to the Gaza Strip.
